Baby Physical Play Activities

Baby Physical Play

Baby physical play helps enhance infant brain development by:

  • developing baby's muscle strength;
  • developing gross motor control;
  • developing body awareness;

In many cases by the end of your baby's first month, you will begin to see them developing some control over their muscles.

They may begin to start holding their head from here and lifting their head during tummy time on the floor.

The following activities will help your baby use their new skills and develop their growing brain.

Infant Brain Development Activities

While bathing your baby, encourage them to kick, splash and wriggle around. Allow them to move freely and enjoy the warmth on their muscles (while still holding onto them). Praise your baby and encourage them to move their hands and legs.

Give your growing baby regular intervals of tummy time on the floor. Your baby may not enjoy tummy time at first, however once they are strong enough to lift their head and shoulders they will start to enjoy it more. Place a toy in front of your baby or lie down in front of them to talk and praise. They will often be more relaxed knowing you are close by.

Placing your baby in a bouncer that hangs from a doorway beam (like the Jolly Jumper bouncers). These are fantastic for strengthening your baby's muscles. They enjoy springing from the ground into the air and burning some energy. Babies can easily tire so don't leave them in there for too long. These can be very effective for some lazier babies who need to improve their core strength.

Once your baby is more mobile, set up some fun obstacle courses around the house with tunnels, cushions and lounges. Follow the leader around the course.

Help your baby walk along and balance on objects, holding their hand.

Find a large soft ball and roll it to your baby. Graduate to kicking and throwing it and chase after it.
