Feeding Your Baby - Breast or Bottle

Feeding Your Baby

Feeding your baby and the decisions you make early in your baby's life can significantly enhance their brain development.

If you are becoming a mom for the first time and wonder whether you want to breastfeed or not, consider the following:

In the first three months or so, feeding your baby breastmilk is considered the best brain food.

Breast milk has advantages such as:

  • it contains fatty acids that promote brain development;
  • it is available without needing warming devices;
  • it's free;
  • it contains the perfect proportion of nutrients that your baby needs, including protein, carbohydrates, calcium and fats;
  • it is easily digestible;
  • it promotes greater immunity against illness and infection;
  • it help the mothers uterus to return to its pre-pregnancy state more easily;
  • it promotes bonding with your baby, emotional satisfaction and a feeling of well-being.

If possible, breastfeeding is a fantastic, natural and healthy option for feeding your baby.

Bottle Feeding

With all these advantages of breast milk, you should not feel guilty if you are unable to breastfeed or choose formula for feeding your baby!

  • Infant formulas are always improving and striving to match the ingredients and their proportions to that of breast milk;
  • While breastfed babies may have relatively fewer infections, by simply ensuring you pay attention to hygiene and sterilise bottles, teats and feeding equipment appropriately,your baby may experience as few too.
  • A happy, unstressed and relaxed mom is the key to nurturing happy babies. If you feel that feeding you baby by bottle best fits your needs, then it's the best for meeting your baby's needs as well.

If you feel you would like to give breastfeeding a try, I recommend that you do some research and reading well before you have your baby so you are perpared and feel confident. Some people find it very easy, while others take some time to adjust and get it down pat. Some wonderful resources I recommend are:

This DVD changed my breastfeeding experience with my second baby.

I suffered with a lot of pain with my first baby. This DVD taught me a technique that was instantly effective for me where I felt no pain at all (the way it should be) and didn't get a single blister.

I cannot recommend it highly enough for first, second or third time moms!
