Projects For Gifted Students

Visit our online Gifted and Talented Store.

Projects for gifted students are one way to continue to extend and enrich childrens' brains. As a parents or teacher you are quick to learn that you need to keep your gifted children stimulated or else they become bored and frustrated. Lesson plans for gifted students can be used both in the classroom or at home for some extension learning.

Gifted Projects

First of all, find out what your gifted child already knows about a subject area. A popular activity is filling out a KWL chart which gets children to answer "What I Know", "What I Want To Know" and "What I Learned". Then you can focus on what the students need to find out.

So what make the best projects for gifted students?

Choose projects that:

  • shift from teacher centered models to the student centered models, such as 'project based learning'. These models are activity based and students take responsibility for their own learning. These are particularly useful for gifted students;
  • support various learning styles;
  • learning is integrated across most subject areas;
  • feature higher order thinking skills;
  • are inquiry based and include thought provoking questions;
  • provide lots of opportunities for hands on activity;
  • promote meaningful and real life learning;
  • include regular opportunities for evaluation and reflection.

Some fantastic resources with projects for gifted students are at our Gifted and Talented Education online store.

Two other sites I recommend for parents or teachers are:

ABC Teach - thousands of ideas for subjects, themed topics and projects for gifted students; and

Teach Your Children Well - lots of lesson plans for gifted students, adaptable for all ages.
