What are higher order thinking skills?

Higher Order Thinking Skills

The skills of memorizing and recalling facts or information are called the lower-order thinking skills as they do not require wide and deep thinking. Sadly, much of the teaching and learning in schools today is based on the lower order thinking skills.

Thinking skills such as clarifying, making analysis, generating ideas, making decisions, problem solving, and planning which require wider and deeper thinking. These are called higher order thinking skills.

Brainy Bambino has written a book based on higher order and creative thinking skills for small children to develop regions of the brain that require a higher level of thinking.

"He who learns but does not think is lost".

Why Encourage Higher Order Thinking?

Bright children are able to:

  • Solve problems
  • Think creatively
  • Think critically
  • Make decisions
  • Generate new ideas
  • Analyse information
  • Plan for the future
Sadly, many questions that are asked require a "Yes" or "No" answer. Many answers are either "Right" or "Wrong". How can our children of the future be expected to find cures for illnesses and invent amazing things without opportunities to take risks, explore different avenues and have the freedom to think without restriction?

The activities written in 'Higher Order & Creative Thinking Skills - 3 to 7 Year Olds' aim to unlock independent thinking in children. The fun and stress-free activities provide opportunities for open-ended response where children are encouraged to look at things differently and 'think outside the square.'

Our Activities to Promote Higher Order Thinking & Creative Thinking Skills include:

  • Creating - Generating new ideas, products, or ways of viewing things, designing, constructing, planning, producing and inventing;
  • Evaluating - Justifying a decision or course of action, checking, hypothesising, critiquing, experimenting and judging;
  • Analysing - Breaking information into parts to explore understandings and relationships, comparing, organising, deconstructing, interrogating and finding;
  • Applying - Using information in another familiar situation, implementing, carrying out, using and executing;
  • Understanding - Explaining ideas or concepts, interpreting, summarising, paraphrasing, classifying and explaining;
  • Remembering - Recalling information, recognising, listing, describing, retrieving, naming and finding.

Age - 3 to 7 Year Olds

This age bracket is an indication ONLY. Activities can easily be adapted to suit younger and older children.

Parents and carers will need to sit with their child to discuss some activities, whereas other children will be able to work through independently.

This book is designed so that children think independently and freely, without too much instruction or direction from adults and teachers.

Who Can Use This Book?

  • Parents - to help their children learn to think at home, on long car/plane/travel trips, in cafes, out to dinner at a restaurant, waiting at the doctors surgery or wherever and whenever you please;
  • Teachers, preschools and home schools - incorporated into class units, as extension and enrichment activities, for gifted and talented children, free time activities, activities to promote group discussions and sharing ideas. Tasks can be used to brainstorm ideas for a given project. Additional or optional homework tasks.
  • Adults - some of these activities can be great "get to know you" and "ice breaker" tasks for seminars and workshops. They provide freedom to show individuality, values, personality and creative thought processes that enhance discussion points. Provide everyone or groups with the same task, then come together to show all the different outcomes. This can show the powers of brainstorming.
  • Anyone interested in helping children learn to think.

What makes this book so unique?

Higher Order Thinking Skills
  • There is no set timeframe these activities need to be completed. Activities can be used as frequently as you and your child desires;
  • All activities are open ended, there is no right or wrong answer to each task. Your child's imagination can go wild in whatever way they desire.
  • No pressure or stress is associated with the activities, they are very relaxed where your child is free to think and explore their thoughts.
  • Activities promote creative thinking and higher order thinking skills. Children are encouraged to think outside the square and make decisions for themselves to create unique and individual results.
  • The activities are not designed to be completed in five seconds with lots of direction from an adult. They are designed to take as long as your child needs and wants to complete a task with independence and creativity. Once the child knows the task, it can take however long the child desires to achieve the wanted effect.
  • The activities can be used over and over again with a different outcome resulting each time. Therefore, some people prefer to print and laminate the activities. Children can be given non-permanent markers to complete each task. When ready, wipe the laminated task clean so it is ready to start again another time, or give to a sibling or other child to try. This is also useful in a classroom setting where enrichment activities are required at different times.
  • If you have multiple children completing the same task, coming together to view and discuss the different outcomes is a fantastic strategy for evaluation and appreciation of others' thoughts.
  • Activities provide many opportunities for further discussion. This can extend and enrich learning further. Duscussions occur between parent/teacher/carer and child or if old enough, children can discuss in groups, as a class, in pairs or even individually to a group of people. This provides a wonderful opportunity to discuss values, morals and ethics with children, opening the lines of communication.

What Others Have had To Say:

"Recently, we bought the Higher Order & Creative Thinking Skills Book after having no luck with other workbooks. Our daughter, aged four, has gone from not wanting to draw or color to pleading for it each day. In the past, our daughter would quickly lose interest in any kind of coloring and run off to play! We were shocked to find that she truly wants to sit, think and then draw her ideas to show us how widely she is thinking. She now wants to put detail into her drawing and coloring to show the depth of her thoughts. It is amazing to see how creative she now is and the change in her approach to paper and crayons!" - Megan, LA
"My son was behind in his learning. He found school work a chore, frustrating and generally avoided it at all costs. I chose the Higher Order and Creative Thinking Skills Book because of its pressure-free, relaxed approach to helping children think. This did wonders for my boy! Each day he would choose a new activity and spend up to thirty minutes completing the task and was so proud of the end result. Discussing his ideas and accomplishments at home motivated him to "want" to think and learn more. We are so proud to say that he has taken so much more interest in his school work and is putting in much more effort. He is not afraid to take risks and his grades have improved out of sight. I cannot recommend this book enough to parents who want a resource at home to inspire thinking and learning." - Therese, FL
"I am a very happy grandmother! My seven-year-old granddaughter just loves your Higher Order & Creative Thinking Skills workbook. She always asks to come over to my place so she can do the "Fun book" again as she calls it. The beauty is, she can repeat the activities as many times as she likes with a different end result each time. In fact, I let all my grandchildren use this book, which makes their moms very happy too." - Clare, OK
"Everyone was amazed when my 8 year old daughter approached a difficult puzzle with such confidence last Christmas and persevered until she completed it. Since doing the activities in your book she trusts her ability to think and knows she can solve problems creatively. I am just wondering if you are going to write a second book so we can continue on from here? Thank you for creating such a wonderful resource!" - Jessica, NY
"I just wanted to let you know how much your product has helped my 5-year-old son. We bought your Higher Order and Creative Thinking Skills book last winter and he was totally absorbed by it. Of all the 100 activities, I can say he loved them all! He has learned so much from the activities but most importantly, he has learned the strategies of "how" to think, be creative and persevere. His teacher at school asked me what we have done because he just took off and is now so advanced. Thank you so much, we will be recommending this book to our friends and family." Tom, NC
"Hi, I wanted to write to say thank you so much for providing me with the best resource I have in my classroom. I use your book to provide activities for my fast finishers and gifted students. The work they produce is amazing and the effort they put into your activities is far greater than anything else. When is your next book coming? Please hurry as we love your style!" Janet, TX
Ultimately, the focus of the activities in 'Higher Order & Creative Thinking Skills' is not to get the "right" answers. Rather, the goal is to develop different ways of thinking and learning while being creative, exploring the environment and having fun.

Providing investigative activities enhances preschoolers' and childrens' cognitive abilities and begins the endless pursuit of academic excellence.
